Rongelap Expeditions - the Marshall Islands First & Only Liveaboard

An Expedition

Day Five

Sunday morning breaks with no sunrise and a cluster of threatening thunderheads appear in the distance. Curls of white break on the shallow reef that fringes the protected cove. The tops of tall palms are a moving photo on the background of the approaching storm. It sounds dire but is actually good news for our group - the wind has shifted to a direction that is favorable for a dive on the wall at Enigan Island and Kaeroga Pass.  The fishing guide, Leigh Tobin, arrives in a small boat for a fishing excursion. He has a reputation for bringing in big fish and produced the first Rongelap Flush in last year's Bill Fishing tournament. We have high hopes for the sunset ritual this evening.

The walls at Enigan Island are spectacular and the dive group is treated to a fair amount of shark action. The walls are loaded with huge fan coral and thousands of reef fish of every variety pan for the cameras.

Captain Masi tells us that he has seen a blip in the lagoon that looks like a wreck but hasn't had an opportunity to investigate it yet ... next trip maybe?

We're happily back at Tufa Island for the night and the wind appears to be subsiding a bit. Two divers decide to explore the fringing reef at Tufa and return to report that it is an excellent dive even at dusk when the sharks can get a little frisky. Our fishing friends have delivered a good size Dogtooth tuna and we enjoy sashimi and sunset.
