An Expedition

Day Seven

At 6:30 am the crescent moon is still bright in the sky and the wind seems to have subsided. Only one more dive before we have to pack up and get some non-dive time in before we fly.

Streaks of pale pink slip through the hazy blue dawn. A scattering of wispy clouds drift over Tufa Island and the engines of the Oleanda are already at work making the journey to West Pass. Our crafty hosts and crew have saved the best for last and we are headed to the area known as "Crazy Corner". How did they arrive at this name? It could be that as we approached the edge of the drop off in the launch, the sharks were circling the boat making us feel like tasty treats.  We made quick descents to the edge of the wall and counted at least 20-30 sharks of every size and shape cruising the reef and wall.

The absence of current, wind or waves gave us perfect conditions along with our usual unlimited visibility.  Never mind that we saw a huge Jewfish and schools of big Trevally surrounded our dive guide, we were definitely paying attention to our toothy friends.

Near the channel, there are some caves that are quite large. In one section we surprised a large Nurse shark who was trying to have a quiet nap until we arrived. A dozing sea turtle occupied a good amount of another spot in the cave. We drifted along the wall and channel as long as we could and then it was time to ascend. The diving portion of our trip was done and we were all wishing we had more time to spend underwater.
