Rongelap Expeditions - the Marshall Islands First & Only Liveaboard

An Expedition

Day Three

Early morning divers on the wall off Mellu Island report strong current running in the opposite direction than was expected but reports from the dive are still excellent. We take some time to beach comb and hunt for glass fishing floats on the island of Bokeon I. The more adventurous dig through through the scrub and come up with treasure. A wade in the reef flats rewards the waders with colorful Pencil Urchin spines in shades of brown & purple.

A family of red hermit crabs have made a home in a big tree in the scrub.  The Coconut Crabs manage to elude our cameras today.

Everyone gets their fill of sand and sun and it's time to head back to the Oleanda for a trip to the Small Boat Pass and another wall dive.

The expedition leader sets out a detailed drawing of the dive site, as he does for all of the dives we make to previous dived locations. This location has a super combination of sloping reef and sand gulley down to an ocean wall that drops to over 1000 meters.  The channel winds around a point called Cabbage Corner which lies between Aeric and Yugui islands.  The focus of the dive is a sand flat playground at 18 meters (60 feet) called the Aquarium.  On a previous trip many baby sharks and large Mantas have been spotted in this location.

The weather isn't cooperating for the wall dives so we'll anchor overnight here and then head back to Eniaetok. We feast on prawns in a tantalizing sauce, loads of other treats and a sinful dessert of strawberry topped chocolate mousse. Food appears throughout the day and fresh fruit or home baked treats are waiting on the dive deck each time we arrive back there after our dive.
